“That’s one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind.”

In celebration of the 50th anniversary of the successful Apollo 11 mission, NASA decided to release some previously unreleased 70mm footage. This documentation shows the whole process of getting a human to the moon, using only archival footage.

After months of planning and testing, on the morning of July 16th 1969 the Saturn V rocket with the Apollo 11 lunar module attached on top of it is standing on the launch pad in Cape Canaveral, Florida. Around 7 o’clock the three Astronauts Neil Armstrong, Michael Collins and Buzz Aldrin enter the rocket. The last two hours before launch they sit alone in the cabin, while it is purged and sealed. 3 minutes before the start the automated countdown takes over and launches the Saturn V at exactly 9:32 local time.

More than 76 hours later, Armstrong and Aldrin get in the “Eagle”, the lunar module, which separates on July 20th at 17:44 UTC. About two and a half hours later the lunar module lands on the moon and another 6 and a half hours later Armstrong leaves the Eagle and becomes the first human to ever set foot on the moon.

Somehow, it doesn’t look like something that happened 50 years ago – but rather an extraordinarily detailed futurist fantasy of what might happen in the years to come, if we could only evolve to some higher degree of verve and hope. (The Guardian)
